Announcement

For those of you who get the Tao of the Day emails, and especially those of you who don’t, the http://www.taooftheday.com website is restarting with a new translation as of Monday. We’ve finished another round of 81 chapters, and it’s time to start over again with #1.¬† Now is the best time to start looking at the Tao.¬† You can sign up for the daily email at http://www.taooftheday.com or subscribe to the RSS feed there as well.

Please note:¬† I will leave all the MP3 files on the server, so there are now two full versions of the Tao available for free download; I don’t see much need for a third.¬† So as of a couple of days ago, I will no longer be recording and releasing new chapters of the Tao in a podcast format. After more than 162 episodes, I’m not sure that it’s something I want to continue to do indefinitely. I will still be sending out a chapter a day by email, RSS and on the blog, but the recordings are done.¬† Actually, now that I don’t have to deal with the recordings, I may be able to put in a little more commentary and not have to let the Tao speak for itself so much.

Thank you for listening, and I hope you’ll stick around for the newsletter!

Once again, I wish each of you a Happy and Healthy New Year. I appreciate your readership over the past year, and this year, I hope to continue along the same path here at the Daily Buddhism. I don’t have any major changes planned; things should continue as they have been.

Yet, I want to do more.

I know my blogs, especially the Daily Buddhism, have been a real help to some people. Teaching the path of Buddhism relieves suffering for many of you, and it’s wonderful that I can help in that way. Still, I’d like to be doing something on a bigger scale, with people who really need help. How can I help reduce suffering in the world?

With my financial situation, anything involving money is out of the question, but one thing I do have is a large and growing number of readers and listeners. I want to use my blogging skills and listener/reader base to do some good for people who are doing good. I can ‚Äúgive‚Äù publicity to those who need it, and that’s exactly what I am going to do this year.

Take a look at http://www.herobulletin.com

There’s not much there yet, I only set up the site this past weekend. But as you can see, the plan is to feature individuals who are making a positive difference in the world. With any luck, as the site grows, some of those Heroes may gain new donors, or volunteers, or whatever it is they need.

Why am I telling you all this?

As Buddhists, it is our goal and our duty to relieve suffering in the world. This is my new project, but I would suggest each of you decide if there is something you can do to make the world a better place and help end suffering in some way, even if only in your own neighborhood or workplace. Meditation is nice, and an important part of Buddhism, but actions matter just as much.

If you know of someone who is already working hard to make a difference, nominate them to be featured on the new site. They deserve the recognition, and they’ll sure appreciate any support that flows their way. I can come up with a few starter Heroes to feature on the site, but I’m going to need names and suggestions fairly quickly.

Be a hero by nominating one today.

http://www.herobulletin.com

Sign up for the newsletter there if you would like to get updates by email. I don’t know the frequency of updates yet, but I doubt it will be more than one a day, certainly less in the beginning.

Announcements 8/25/08

1.	For those of you who are enjoying the taooftheday.com podcasts, I have a special new audiobook offer. The website and podcast are currently at around chapter fifty. For those of you who are impatient to finish, you’ll like this:

“The Tao- Remastered” This is a three CD set featuring the entire Tao Te Ching, read by me. This is the same translation we are currently working through on the site, but all the audio has been completely re-recorded in far higher quality than the original podcast recordings.

You get two audio CDs that will play in a regular CD player with all 81 chapters ready to go. There is also a third CD with all the files in MP3 format ready to load into your iPod or other audio player. The third CD also has the entire text of the Tao in PDF eBook format, ready to read online or print out.

The Tao Remastered:
http://taooftheday.com/tao-remastered

2.	My latest audio show, Arcane Tales, is now online and active. This one is primarily a podcast or audio show devoted to classic tales of horror, science-fiction, and fantasy, read by‚Ķ me of course! At some point in the future, I’ll even be slipping in some of my own fiction stories. The website is at http://www.arcanetales.com or you can subscribe to the audio feed directly at http://feeds.feedburner.com/ArcaneTales As usual with a new podcast, it’s not available on iTunes just yet, but will be soon. I’ll be sure to mention it again when it becomes available that way. There’s also a sign-up form for announcements and notifications that you can join if you are interested.

3.	If you enjoy the show or the newsletters, please donate something. I’m not getting paid anything for the work I do here, and sites do cost money. Everything and anything you send in will help cover the costs of improving the site. There are donation buttons right on the website, so it’s easy to find and donate. And yes, there ARE reasons I’m bringing this up more often than I have in the past.

4.	Although I will still be answering emails, I am going to be taking next week off from all my newsletters. I have several special projects that will be taking most of the week. Stay tuned!
